More Baby Blankets

My favorite part of sewing gifts for friends is trying to find a fabric that fits them. Below are some recent blankets, one for a friend, one for my sister, and two for my baby boy. Thank you satin blanket binding for making it so easy to sew some nice giftsIMG_3720IMG_3986 IMG_3447   IMG_3725

Onesie/Burp Rag Gift Set

Using a plain onesie (I buy them a bit big, as the sizing is always too small, for Gerber anyway), measure and trace a shape or letter of your choice onto fabric. Cut it out and sew the edges back.

IMGP2367IMGP2368

Center width-wise and place a bit high on the shirt (so if the babe is wearing pants it won’t be covered). Sew through the middle and double stich around the edges.

Pair with some matching burp rags for an easy but cute gift. For one friend I did this after the baby came so I could do an initial of her name on the onesie. Personalized baby stuff is the best!IMGP2375

We had a last minute shower last week so I didn’t have time to make a blanket, but this was pretty quick.

More Baby Gifts

I’ve been sewing up a storm over the past couple months… many baby blankets, nursing covers, onesies, burp rags, etc. for friends and family having babies soon. I haven’t remembered to take pictures of them all, but here are some. These things have become my go-to gifts for showers.

Blanket for my friend having a baby girl.P1060907It’s hard to see in the above picture, but this is the backing I use for my baby blankets… it is the softest thing I’ve ever felt, yet it’s thin and smooth so it sews well. I’m contemplating making myself a blanket with this!

I have a couple more I wish I had shots of, so I’m hoping I can document better moving forward.

More Fabric Banners

After making a girlish banner last summer for a friend’s bridal shower, I’d been wanting to make a more masculine one for Emerson’s birthday party, and other events.IMGP1947

The last banner was made of scalloped half-circles, but this one I made out of triangles, cut with pinking shears. IMGP1696

Make sure you make a triangle pattern in the size you’d like before you start cutting and sewing.IMGP1695Cut out pieces. I used 3 fabrics.

IMGP1694

Arrange your cutouts in the order you like before you start sewing. I like it to be a little asymmetrical, so I mixed the patterns up a bit.IMGP1698

IMGP1705

Sew triangles together, sides lined up. IMGP1706

Sew triangles to bias tape.IMGP1710

And it’s done! One of the quickest sewing projects around.IMGP1947

Scalloped Party Banner

Was recently in need of a tutorial for a party banner and came across this cute scalloped version from Sew Mama Sew. I’d had to say this was actually a really fun sewing project. (The original tutorial can be found here.)

Here’s what you need:

- garland template (free PDF download)
- 13 pieces of coordinating fabric measuring 6.5x 8 inches
- one package (3 yards) of extra wide double fold bias tape
- pins, needles, thread, fabric pen, iron

And here’s how it’s made:

Cut out squares of your fabricP1050956Cut out garland template for tracing, and trace (pin underneath template before you trace) P1050977 P1050971

Pin over your traced lineP1050983

Cut around stitching, leaving 1/4 inch borderP1050979Turn fabric right-side out and place in order you’d like on bannerP1050988 IronP1050986 Pin to bias tapeP1050994 And sew together. That’s it. Super simple and cute.P1050995

More Nursing Covers

Not only are these quick to make, but as a mother I’d say it was one of the best gifts I received——for a nursing mom on the go, you use these a lot.P1050720P1050645

Paired with some burp rags, it’s a nice set.P1050695P1050694

Here are some in-progress shots:

I think ironing is the key to good sewingP1050619

Double stitches help things from ripping, right?P1050623 Pinning is always good also. I really don’t like the tedious parts of sewing, but I’ve found they really are necessary.P1050687

Burp Rags

An easy way to make regular burp rags more absorbent, and of course more appealing. Pretty self-explanatory: fabric squares sewn onto the rag with stitching through the middle to keep from bunching when washed.
